Three Golden Rules for Success

On that early morning in 1954 forty eager reporters were listening to Mr. Paul Getty Sr. He was giving a presentation for the opening of the Paul Getty Museum. The oil tycoon finished his compelling speech and it was time for the Q & A. One reporter stood up and asked Mr. Getty what—in his opinion—were the golden rules for success in business. He glanced into the conference room cleared his throat and started to speak with a dark voice.

“There are three rules that lead to business success. The first one is to wake up early…” The reporter was kind of disappointed to hear that. He indeed got up early to be at this press conference at 7:00 a.m. Getty continued after a short pause. “The second rule is to work hard…” There was some mumbling in the room…what was Getty talking about? Everybody has been working hard… is he kidding? “And the third rule is…” Getty paused again and looked into the eyes of the reporter. “to strike oil!” Everybody laughed and Getty invited another reporter to come up with another question.

However, there is a lot of truth in what Getty said. “Get up early” means being there first, be there in time, make sure that you seize the opportunity. “Work hard” means that you simply reject rejection. You will not take no for an answer. There is always a way to get there if there is a will. And the third golden rule is “strike oil”. Brilliant!
